Tell us your Baboró Story

Over the years people have been coming up to us to tell us about an experience they had or that a child had in attending a Baboró event.  We welcome these stories and would love to share them with others.

Here’s one Baboró story, from a facilitator who works with young children in Galway

“I thought you would like to know about the following which happened in HF* Special Needs School.  Senior One class from the school went to see Tiniy Paradises and also joined in the Draw ‘n’ Talk Session.

The following Thursday I went into the school as usual to give a drama workshop.  This class, who are quiet usually, came bounding into the workshop space full of chat about the show they saw. With them were paintings they painted about their interpretation of the show.  Their teacher had continued on with the Draw ‘n’ Talk session the following day. One particular painting stood out.  It was painted by a girl who has a lot of trouble communicating, and gets frustrated very easily.  I would have had difficulty involving her in a drama session as her attention span is minimal.

On this particular day A* told me all about her painting and what she loved about the show.  It was a breakthrough for all who work with her to have her focus on a subject matter for so long and still return to it with such enthusiasm.

When we had finished talking about the paintings, I asked the group about their favourite part and M* who has minimal spoken English and special needs broke into the song “I Want to Break Free”. It was hilarious and we all joined in.

For A to actually link the performance, imagination, painting, drama workshop and our own little performance was truly a breakthrough.  My following workshops with A have been so much easier as we have now made a connection.  Congratulations on another successful festival, it was a pleasure being part of it and thanks for the opportunity.”
