In Real Life

Abbey Theatre

Ireland

Mo 13 Oct - Fr 17 Oct

In Real Life explores social media and identity in the classroom, based on the comedy Spreading the News by Lady Gregory. It uses Lady Gregory’s hilarious take on the dangers of rumours and pompous authority to examine how modern friendships can be threatened by careless communication and clueless adults.

First Year Kai, disillusioned with the move her family made to a small town, attempts to navigate the world of social media. There she finds her new school’s Instagram queen, Cleo. But life online and in real life are two very different things and when Kai posts something carelessly, she learns how quickly words can take on a life of their own… especially with the school’s Talent Show just around the corner.

In Real Life showcases two actors portraying multiple characters, vividly depicting Kai and Cleo’s families, teachers, and their lives at school.

In Real Life is presented in the school/classroom. Contact our school box office here if you are interested in this show visiting your school in County Galway. Please note that capacity is limited.

As Ireland’s national theatre, the Abbey Theatre’s ambition is to enrich the cultural lives of everyone with a curiosity for and interest in Irish theatre, stories, artists and culture. Courage and imagination are at the heart of our storytelling, while inclusivity, diversity and equality are at the core of our thinking.

Led by Co-Directors Caitríona McLaughlin (Artistic Director) and Mark O’Brien (Executive Director), the Abbey Theatre celebrates both the rich canon of Irish dramatic writing and the potential of future generations of Irish theatre artists. On our stages we find and champion new voices and new ways of seeing, our purpose – to identify combinations of characters we are yet to meet, having conversations we are yet to hear.
