Lindsay Deely is an art and science educator, practitioner and researcher whose work lies at the intersection of these two disciplines. With a strong commitment to expanding access to both art and science, particularly for underserved communities, her work aims to inspire young people to explore the world around them through creative, hands-on experiences that boost confidence and curiosity.
In 2012, Lindsay founded Toodlelou Creativity Lab, an art and science makers space based in Co. Galway. Through this initiative, she has designed and facilitated numerous workshops that merge artistic expression with scientific exploration.
Lindsay has been curating workshops for Baboró since 2017. As a Baboró Artist-in-Residence, Lindsay looks forward to working with young people to co-create new work that will foster meaningful relationships with young participants, enriching their festival experiences and promoting continuous engagement with the arts and sciences.
What advice would you give to a child who wants to be an artist?
You already are! We’re all born creative and the trick is just to let yourself play with art and enjoy it. Art is really about the process and how it makes us feel, so forget about the end result and just let yourself make something interesting each day. I think that if you keep art in your life as you grow, the idea of working as an artist when you’re an adult will feel entirely possible (and maybe even essential).
What is something you watched/saw/listened to recently that inspired you?
I’m currently reading Art Cure by Daisy Fancourt about the impact of the arts on our health. It’s a fascinating read, academic but really well written and further proof of just how important the arts are to us all, at every stage of life. I highly recommend it!
