Biodiversity in Your Backyard

Lindsay Deely

Supporting children and young people to realise their creative potential, promoting individual and collective wellbeing.

In 2025 Baboró Artist-in-Residence Lindsay Deely facilitated ‘Biodiversity in your Backyard’ workshops which reached 51 children aged 4-12 years and 16 adults from our Community Partnerships across Galway city.

Workshops were designed to empower participants to engage with their local environment and bioregion: learning about local flora and fauna, whilst also exploring their relationship with their local landscape through artistic expression. Participants explored scientific approaches to environmental stewardship, with support from researchers at the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water.

Participants gained an understanding of:

  • Environmental stewardship
  • Tools for artistic expression
  • Language to describe their relationship with their community & environment.

Participants also had the opportunity to explore and document their local neighbourhood and environment through artistic means, creating ownership and a sense of belonging in these spaces which are all ours to use. These workshops helped children and young people to realise their creative potential, promoting individual and collective wellbeing.

Community partners on this project included:

  • Ballybane After Classroom Education Club
  • ARD Family Resource Centre
  • Galway City Partnership The BRIDGE Project

Lindsay Deely is an art and science educator, practitioner, and researcher whose work lies at the intersection of these two disciplines. With a strong commitment to expanding access to both art and science, particularly for underserved communities, her work aims to inspire young people to explore the world around them through creative, hands-on experiences that boost confidence and curiosity. In 2012, Lindsay founded Toodlelou Creativity Lab, an art and science makerspace based in Co. Galway. Through this initiative, she has designed and facilitated numerous workshops that merge artistic expression with scientific exploration. She has been curating workshops for Baboró since 2017. As a Baboró Artist-in-Residence, Lindsay looks forward to working with young people to co-create new work that will foster meaningful relationships with young participants, enriching their festival experiences and promoting continuous engagement with the arts and sciences.
