Playful Printmaking Workshop

Exploring and testing playful strategies for student wellbeing and learning across the curriculum.

“How can drawing connect us to others?”

That is the question at the heart of Baboró's Playful Printmaking Workshops. Led by artists Bryony Hussey and Sorcha Ní Chróinín, participants explore and test playful strategies for student wellbeing and learning across the curriculum through this Continued Professional Development (CPD) workshop.

Using printmaking techniques and everyday materials, participants learn how to bring these skills to their work with children in a supportive environment with their peers. The group focuses on monoprinting techniques and how to use these processes at home, in the classroom, library or community setting.

Through discussion and creative activities they:

  • Learn about alternative printmaking approaches to create stories
  • Experiment with mark-making and drawing techniques
  • Use different types of marks, pattern and gestures to create their own designs
  • Practice noticing and sharing about their artworks and creative ways to facilitate conversation in their community settings

These workshops project began in 2022 with staff in schools, libraries and family resource centres. Public workshops have since taken place at Baboró's annual festival for SNAs, teachers and artists.

Bryony Hussey is a neurodivergent interdisciplinary artist and educator based in Connemara. Drawing and visual languages are the foundations of her practice. Her work centres on multisensory play and community-led approaches. She is dedicated to making art accessible from an early age and works with festivals, universities and galleries to empower children to tell their stories. Originally from Dublin, Bryony lived in London for half her life and is passionate about place, children's rights and neurodiverse stories.

Sorcha Ní Chróinín is a maker and arts facilitator. She has a background in Fine Art and Animation, and was stage manager for Branar Téatar do Pháistí and Moonfish Theatre for many years up until 2020. Since then she has been making props, educational resources and digital workshops for Branar, and has had the great opportunity to be an Associate Artist with Baboró on their 3 year partnership with UK immersive theatre company Punchdrunk Enrichment. She is passionate about the benefits of play, experimentation and exploration for well-being and mental health.
