Mónica Muñoz is a dance artist originally from Barcelona and based in Dublin. She creates dance performances that are bold and accessible. Mónica’s work is inspired by children’s zest for life, with a particular focus on the value of dance at a young age when the body is full of movement. Her work aims to reawaken adults’ forgotten desires for surrender and physicality. Mónica aims to inspire physicality and personal connection, especially in a society in which we increasingly live on screens. She finds her audiences everywhere; in theatres, school halls, early years centres, outdoors, rural areas and across countries.  

What does it look like when you’re making creative work?

Trust - it’s a very important part of the work. I try to build a family during the creative process. If everybody feels really relaxed and connected there is more space for risk. It’s a matter of finding a way to bring out everyone’s unique value. In rehearsals there is a mixture of following a plan and allowing participants to get involved in something which unfolds, I often don’t know where it will take me.

What is something you watched/saw/listened to recently that inspired you?

I recently saw WASCO! which is a performance that gives children space to play in a world without adults, from choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez. This was a very uplifting piece of work, full of chaos and beauty and an invitation for a renewed sense of freedom.
