We are delighted to partner with Brenda Romero, BAFTA winning game designer and CEO of Romero Games, to host a Game Design Workshop, to be held on Saturday the 29th of June at the Connacht Hotel, Galway. Intended for girls and girls aged 10-12 years, the workshop will have 100 aspiring young game designers work together in teams to develop their own game concept and characters.
Romero Games will be facilitating two workshops throughout the day. The first will be dedicated exclusively to girls to encourage them to pursue a career in game design and technology. The second workshop will be open to girls and boys.
“We are passionate about our craft and believe in fostering a fun and vibrant environment where creativity can thrive”, said Brenda Romero, CEO of Romero Games. “I was 11 when I started in game design and it is very important to me to be able to share my excitement around tech with children and to encourage game design as a career. In particular, I am driven to inspire confidence in young girls to pursue their curiosity and ambition in this creative profession.”
During the workshop, attendees will learn about the four pillars of games development: design, art, code and audio. Working in teams, they will be guided by Brenda and the artistic and technical leads from Romero Games before presenting their work as a group. Brenda Romero will explore what makes a game a game, and give attendees the building blocks to develop a game of their own. Art Director, Denman Rooke, will demonstrate character and environmental drawing and work with participants to develop their own characters. Chief Technical Officer, John Romero, and Technical Director, Keith O’Conor, will focus on code and audio in a live demonstration.
“We are excited to collaborate with Brenda and her team on this series of workshops,” said Aislinn O’hEocha, Executive Artistic Director of Baboró. “Our collaboration with Romero Games gives us another opportunity throughout the year to inspire and engage children through high quality and fun creative experiences.”
Now in its 23rd year, Baboró International Arts Festival for Children will run from October 14th – 20th. All the money raised from this fundraising workshop will go towards supporting Baboró's access programme, which offers subsidies and supports to ensure access to the arts for all children, regardless of geographic, economic, physical, intellectual or cultural status.
